Activities on the Island

The contrast and diversity of the island and its shores provides a host of activities for you to enjoy whether on land or sea. Wherever you travel and depending on your interests, one is always in search of the elusive list of things you absolutely ‘must do’ before leaving. Our professional and knowledgeable guest service team will, with your help, point you in the right direction to ensure you make the most out of your stay here in Madeira.

GOLF
The even climate all year round and exuberant landscapes are some of the factors that contribute to make Madeira an irresistible golf destination, sought after by professionals and occasional players alike. Each of the three courses boast breathtaking scenery however they offer very different challenges.
At 500m above sea level, Palheiro Golf offers spectacular views over Funchal, however you need to be careful as the distraction can be punishing.
Santo Serra gives amazing views to the East and the Deserta Islands and as the original home to the Madeira Open, will stretch the very best. However as a 27 hole course it also offers a more forgiving 9 holes that you can use to limber up.
While Porto Santo is a two and a half hour ferry ride away (or 15 minute flight), it is the current home of the EPGA Madeira Open and offers some of the best golf to be found in Europe. It plays long and will be sure to separate the men from the boys.

BIG GAME FISHING
Several seaborne migration routes pass across Madeira’s coast, such as the Atlantic Blue Marlin and the Big Eye Tuna. The Marlin can turn up as early as April and when they strike, you had better be prepared as Madeira has a history of landing some of the largest marlin in the world. The much prized ‘Grander’ (marlin over 1000lb) is quite common (by global comparisons) in these waters and attracts anglers worldwide. So it isn’t hard to figure out why the island has become a privileged location for big game fishing. We will get you on the best boats with the most experienced crew. Come and give it a try.

DOLPHIN AND WHALE WATCHING
OR EVEN SWIM WITH THE DOLPHINS
There are many life time experiences but few will capture your hearts and minds as much as the first time you encounter dolphins or whales in the wild. And yes, you can even swim with dolphins in the wild. You can’t get much closer to nature than that!
There are a variety of boat and yacht options available, from sea ribs (most fun) to catamarans and other larger craft. Regardless of which option you choose, The Vine is just a 2 minute walk from the marina.

WALKING AND HIKING
Madeira is a Mecca for walkers from far and wide. If you’re a fan of walking or hiking, you will just love it. There are innumerous trails from the passive to the extreme that simply take your breath away. Take a walk along the historic “levadas” (canal paths) which meander through and around valleys, forests and mountains offering a different view with each turn you make.

DIVING
Some truly remarkable diving can be enjoyed in Madeira due to the warm and translucent waters of the gulf stream and also aided by the protection of the local underwater national park. Caves and grottos, large groupers, barracudas, trigger and parrot fishes and even on occasion, manta rays.
